Some TUNE IN readers already know that my main efforts in the literary field go into aphorisms*. A large number of them have recently been translated by our praiseworthy “chief translator”, the lutenist Bill Buchanan (who has, by the way, been working for some years on an academic translation of the Mozart family correspondence). In all the pre-Christmas stress, hardly any of us can take the time to read a more lengthy text, so this time we have decided on these short ones.

* A little more on the genre of the aphorism: the distinguishing formal feature is brevity. The Greek word means “limit”: the word shares the same root as “horizon”. These are often linguistic games which can only be translated with difficulty, or not at all. The sound of the words, the rhythm and the rhetorical form (an innumerable quantity of them) are intended to give the text literary quality because they support or supplement the thought using formal means; these cause readers to pay attention to details and encourage them to reflect. This distinguishes the literary aphorism from the maxim or proverb. Despite the formal restrictions, there are of course no limits to the content of the aphorism. Precisely because of their brevity, then, aphorisms can leap from one theme to another. For me personally, one of the interesting questions is how the theme of “Christian faith” or the experience of God can be put into an aphoristic form. The genre is old: in the broader sense, it includes the sayings of Solomon. Many philosophers have written aphorisms. During the Enlightenment, the aphorism blossomed anew. Aphorisms of recent times often have a satirical touch.

How do you recognise humility?
Accuse it of pride. It will apologise.

God became an outsider.

must carry special weight with God.

Learn to believe what you know.

and God has something to do with everything.

Einige Leser der TUNE INs wissen es: Ich habe mich auf literarischem Terrain vor allem dem Aphorismus* verschrieben. Unser verdienstvoller „Chef-Übersetzer“, der Lautenist Bill Buchanan (der übrigens seit Jahren an einer wissenschaftlichen Übersetzung von Mozart-Briefen arbeitet), hat kürzlich eine grössere Anzahl davon übersetzt. Die stressige Vor-Weihnachtszeit erlaubt wohl keinem von uns eine längere Lektüre, weshalb wir uns diesmal für kurze Texte entschieden haben.

* Noch etwas zur Gattung des Aphorismus: Aphorismen zeichnen sich formal durch ihre Kürze aus. Das griechische Wort bedeutet Begrenzung; darin steckt derselbe Wortstamm wie in „Horizont“. Oft sind es Sprachspiele, die sich natürlich schwer oder gar nicht übersetzen lassen. Wortklang, Rhythmus und rhetorische Formen (es gibt unzählige davon) sollen dem Text eine literarische Qualität verleihen, weil sie den Gedanken formal unterstützen bzw. ergänzen und ihn zugleich in jene irritierende Schwingung versetzen, die den Leser aufhorchen lässt und ihn zum Nachdenken anregt.  Darin unterscheidet sich der literarische Aphorismus vom Sinnspruch oder vom Sprichwort. Bei aller formalen Knappheit: Inhaltlich sind dem Aphorismus natürlich keine Grenzen gesetzt. So können Aphorismen gerade wegen ihrer Kürze von Thema zu Thema springen. Mich selber interessiert unter an dem die Frage, wie sich das Thema „christlicher Glaube“ bzw. die Erfahrung Gottes aphoristisch formulieren lässt. Die Gattung ist alt: Die Sprüche Salomos gehören im weitesten Sinn dazu. Viele Philosophen haben Aphorismen geschrieben. In der Aufklärung erlebte der Aphorismus eine neue Blüte. Der neuzeitliche Aphorismus hat oft eine satirische Note.

Mit welchen Gefühlen sieht der fanatische Vegetarier
einer fleischfressenden Pflanze zu?

Auch im Jungbrunnen
besteht Ertrinkungsgefahr.

Zunehmend besessen
– vom eigenen Körper

Wir werden von Blickfängen
gejagt.

Wie Demut erkennen?
Man werfe ihr Stolz vor. Sie wird bereuen.
Stolz wird empört aufbegehren.

interessiert = interessant

Künstler erfinden das Rad neu,
unter das sie geraten.

Entertainment:
Je reibungsloser, desto kälter.

Die Zeit läuft davon.
Dem einen in die Vergangenheit,
dem anderen in die Ewigkeit.

Weil der Mensch Gott wurde,
wurde Gott Mensch.

Gott ist Outsider geworden.
Andere Götter geben sich mit Insidern ab.

Eine Kirche, die nicht mehr nach Stall riechen will,
verleugnet ihre Herkunft.

Manche erlauben sich,
was Gott ihnen verbietet,
weil andere sich verbieten,
was Gott ihnen erlaubt. Und umgekehrt.

Lob, das aus einem schweren Herzen kommt,
muss auch vor Gott besonderes Gewicht haben.

Übung gegen den Zweifel:
Lerne zu glauben, was du weißt.

Ist der Heilige Geist Wasser,
lässt er sich nicht verwässern.

Die Kraft zum Beten
empfängt man im Gebet.

Für den Glauben hat alles etwas mit Gott zu tun
und Gott etwas mit allem.
