This year’s guideline thought for Crescendo is «Renewal». One central Bible passage on this is 2 Cor 5:17  
«Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!» (2 Cor 5:17)

In the book «Heaven is for Real», which also became a very successful film, the young boy Colton Burpo tells of his near-death experience.
On the verge of death, he met Jesus and saw astonishing things. Among the things he reported were meetings with family members of whom he cannot have had any knowledge. He even saw a second sister, whom his parents lost in a miscarriage. Colton’s father was a pastor, and so he started to thoroughly test the statements made by his little boy from a theological point of view. And in all aspects he found agreement with the biblical message.

Calling as a pastor
One day, Colton’s mother asked him a strange question: “Did Jesus say anything about your dad becoming a pastor?” Colton nodded enthusiastically. “Oh, yes! Jesus said he went to Daddy and told him he wanted Daddy to be a pastor and Daddy said yes, and Jesus was really happy.”
His mother’s question is somehow quite understandable. In the crises of everyday life, a certain question can turn up from time to time: Does God really want me to be doing this? In the case of Colton’s mother, the question was presumably: Has God really called us, my husband and me, to this (not always easy) ministry in the church?» Colton’s answer must have comforted her. The position is a pastor was no chance event and was not based on human decision, but was God‘s wish. And God was pleased with the «Yes».

Calling as an artist? The story of Richard
The story has a clear point. It is very understandable when one thinks about the spiritual ministry of a pastor. Artists, on the other hand, cannot expect God to call them, can they? This is one reason why many, as soon as they become Christians, give up their art so they can go into a spiritual ministry.
Recently, however, a visual artist, let‘s call him Richard, recounted the following experience: in his early years he ended up in a creative crisis. He was not selling any pictures and he was weighing up the possibility of giving up his art altogether. He asked God to give him a sign, and prayed something like this: «You know that I need around fifty thousand Swiss francs per year. I can only continue as an artist if I reach this figure.» Then something unbelievable happened: when he looked at his bank accounts the next day, the number 50,000 showed up! Why, completely unexpectedly, had someone transferred this huge sum to him? Richard did some searching and managed to find out the donor‘s name. Then came the second surprise: the donor had inherited a large amount and now wanted to give someone part of it. He had prayed for guidance, and that was when Richard came into his mind. At the same time he had the impression that God was saying, «What Richard is doing has spiritual significance.»

Calling as a Christian artist?
Now, this story would easily make sense too, if one assumes that God needs artists who create Christian art or works for the church. But Richard’s paintings were neither sacred nor in any particular sense Christian. His pictures are abstract and do not evoke, at first sight at least, any Christian associations.
If one places the two stories told here next to each other, we can draw this conclusion: God calls people not only as pastors, but also as artists – and certainly not only explicitly «Christian» ones. And he is glad when his calling meets with the response «Yes». What a liberation from the often torturing uncertainty about one‘s own activity, what a great renewal of the mind it can be, to come to this awareness: My art is important to God! It has «spiritual» significance!

Prayer:

Dear God,
you know that my everyday artistic life is often heavy going, and that there are many reasons to doubt my art.
Often I ask myself: Is God in any way pleased with what I do? Should I not rather go in for a Christian ministry where I can bring plentiful blessing?
I believe that there are callings to full-time Christian ministry, and that, here and there, artists can also be called this way.
But you know that I feel I am called to art.
Help me to receive this calling anew from your hand and to be thankful for it.
And also help my colleagues to live in this calling and to recognise that God needs musicians and dancers, actors and painters, filmmakers and authors…
Bless us in our calling and make us a blessing to others.

Das Leitmotiv von Crescendo heisst in diesem Jahr «Erneuerung». Eine zentrale Bibelstelle dazu steht in 2 Kor 5, 17: «Wenn also jemand in Christus ist, dann ist das neue Schöpfung, das Alte ist vergangen, siehe, Neues ist geworden.»

Im Buch “Heaven Is for Real” (“Den Himmel gibt’s echt”), das auch mit grossem Erfolg verfilmt wurde, erzählt der Junge Colton Burpo von seiner Nahtoderfahrung. Am Rande des Todes war er Jesus begegnet und hatte erstaunliche Dinge gesehen. Unter anderem berichtete er davon, Familienangehörige getroffen zu haben, von denen er nichts hatte wissen können. Er sah sogar eine zweite Schwester, die seine Eltern durch eine Fehlgeburt verloren hatten. Coltons Vater war Pastor, und so begann er, die Aussagen seines Jungen sorgfältig mit theologischem Blick zu prüfen. Und in allen Dingen stellte eine Übereinstimmung mit der biblischen Botschaft fest.

Berufung zum Pastor
Eines Tages stellte die Mutter Colton eine seltsame Frage: “Sagte Jesus irgendetwas darüber, dass dein Vater Pastor ist?” Colton nickte begeistert und meinte: “Oh ja! Jesus sagte, dass er zu Papa gegangen war und ihm gesagt hatte, er wolle ihn zum Pastor berufen. Papa hatte eingewilligt, was Jesus sehr glücklich machte.”
Die Frage der Mutter ist irgendwie nachvollziehbar. In den Krisen des Alltags mag immer wieder die Frage auftauchen: Möchte Gott wirklich, dass ich das tue? Im Fall von Coltons Mutter war es wohl die Frage: “Hat Gott meinen Mann und mich wirklich zu diesem (nicht immer einfachen) Dienst in der Kirche berufen?” Coltons Antwort musste sie trösten: Das Pastorenamt war kein Zufall und gründete nicht auf einer menschlichen Entscheidung, sondern war von Gott gewollt. Und Gott war glücklich über das “Ja” dazu.

Berufung zum Künstler? Die Geschichte von Richard
Diese Geschichte leuchtet ein. Sie ist nachvollziehbar, wenn man an den geistlichen Dienst eines Pastors denkt. Künstler hingegen können nicht erwarten, dass Gott sie ruft, oder? Aus diesem Grund haben schon viele, sobald sie Christen wurden, ihre Kunst aufgegeben, um in einen geistlichen Dienst zu gehen.
Kürzlich erzählte mir jedoch ein visueller Künstler, nennen wir ihn Richard, folgende Begebenheit: In seinen jungen Jahren geriet er in eine Schaffenskrise. Er verkaufte keine Bilder und trug sich mit dem Gedanken, seine Kunst völlig aufzugeben. Er bat Gott um ein Zeichen zu geben und betete etwa diese Worte: “Du weißt, dass ich pro Jahr etwa fünfzigtausend Schweizer Franken brauche. Ich kann nur Künstler bleiben, wenn ich diesen Betrag  erziele.” Dann geschah das Unglaubliche: Als er anderntags in sein Bankkonto schaute, erschien die Zahl 50’000 ! Warum hatte ihm jemand aus blauem Himmel diese riesengrosse Summe überwiesen? Richard forschte nach und konnte den Spender eruieren. Dann kam die zweite Überraschung: Der Spender hatte eine grosse Summe geerbt und wollte nun jemandem einen Teil davon geben. Er hatte um Führung gebetet, und da war ihm Richard in den Sinn gekommen. Dabei hatte er den Eindruck bekommen, dass Gott ihm sagte: «Das, was Richard tut, hat eine geistliche Bedeutung.»

Berufung zum christlichen Künstler?
Nun wäre auch diese Geschichte irgendwie verständlich, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass Gott Künstler braucht, die christliche Kunst schaffen oder in der Kirche tätig sind. Richard aber malt weder sakrale noch irgendwie christliche Kunst. Seine Bilder sind abstrakt und wecken zumindest auf den ersten Blick überhaupt keine christlichen Assoziationen.
Legt man die beiden hier erzählten Geschichten übereinander, so heisst dies: Gott beruft nicht nur Pastorinnen und Pastoren, sondern auch Künstlerinnen und Künstler, und zwar nicht nur explizit «christliche». Und Gott ist glücklich, wenn seinem Ruf zur Kunst gefolgt wird! Wie gross wird die Befreiung aus der oft quälenden Ungewissheit über das eigene Tun, wie gross wird erneuerte Bewusstsein sein, wenn wir merken: Meine Kunst ist für Gott wichtig! Sie ist “geistlich bedeutsam”!

Gebet:

Lieber Gott,
Du weißt, dass mein künstlerischer Alltag oft mühsam ist, und dass es viele Gründe gibt, an meiner Kunst zu zweifeln.
Oft frage ich mich: Gefällt es Dir überhaupt, dass ich das tue? Sollte ich nicht lieber in einen christlichen Dienst gehen, wo ich segenreich wirken kann?
Ich glaube daran, dass es Berufungen zum vollzeitlichen christlichen Dienst gibt, und dass sie auch da und dort auch Künstler treffen können.
Aber du weißt: Ich fühle mich vor allem zur Kunst berufen.
Hilf mir, dies neu aus deiner Hand zu nehmen und dafür dankbar zu sein.
Hilf auch meinen Kolleginnen und Kollegen, darin zu leben und zu erkennen: Gott braucht Musiker und Tänzerinnen, Schauspieler und Malerinnen, Filmemacher und Schriftstellerinnen…
Bestätige und segne unsere Berufung. Und mach uns zum Segen anderer.
