– Does God ever change his mind?
– Is humanity inherently good or evil?
– Why would GOD create imperfect beings and then punish them for their imperfections?
– Can a Christian practice Yoga?
– What about art which shows the ugliness of the world and which is itself quite ugly?
– etc.

This TUNE IN temporarily interrupts the series of Lenten meditations on Bach’s BW2. Here we are looking at the question of how artists can tell other artists about their faith.

Learning from Paul
Now, in the churches there are more than enough courses on the topic of evangelisation, and some very helpful concepts such as the Alpha Course, with which we at Crescendo have also gathered good experiences. And yet: It does make a difference whether we have artists speaking to artists, or businessmen speaking to businessmen, or policemen to policemen… That is, here we can learn from Paul, who was a Greek to the Greeks and a Jew to the Jews (1 Cor. 9:20). And this has a further implication: Who can be an artist to the artists, if not us? We cannot simply delegate this to others.

A different language
Artists have a different way of speaking compared with, for example, that mathematician who, in the course of a discussion on faith, stated, «I believe because the Bible works».

Different topics
And then artists also have different topics which concern them. And other needs. Perhaps, as sensitive people, they are more unsettled by the dark events in this world and in society.

A different feeling for life, different way of relating
If art is «holistic», then similarly an artist‘s feeling for life and way of relating tends to be holistic.
We are looking at this question: «How can artists tell other artists about faith – holistically and comprehensibly?» Putting it another way: What is said should not destroy the holistic relationship, and the holistic message should not exclude clear proclamation; for without the message of the gospel no faith can take root and grow.

Von Paulus lernen
Nun gibt es in den Kirchen genügend Kurse zum Thema Evangelisation und sehr hilfreiche Konzepte wie den Alpha-Kurs, mit dem wir auch bei Crescendo gute Erfahrungen gemacht haben. Und doch: Es macht einen Unterschied, ob Kulturschaffende mit Kulturschaffenden sprechen oder Geschäftsleute mit Geschäftsleuten oder Polizisten mit Polizisten…Das heisst: Wir können hier von Paulus lernen, der den Griechen ein Grieche und den Juden ein Jude war (1.Kor.9,20). Das heisst zugleich: Wer kann den Künstlerinnen eine Künstlerin sein, wenn nicht wir? Wir können das nicht einfach an andere delegieren.

Andere Sprache
Kulturschaffende haben eine andere Art zu sprechen als zum Beispiel jener Mathematiker, der in einem Glaubensgespräch meinte: «Ich glaube, weil die Bibel funktioniert».

Andere Themen
Dann haben Künstlerinnen und Künstler auch andere Themen, die sie beschäftigen. Und andere Bedürfnisse. Vielleicht werden sie als sensible Menschen auch häufiger von den dunklen Ereignissen in dieser Welt umgetrieben.

Anderes Lebensgefühl, andere Art von Beziehungen
Wenn Kunst «ganzheitlich» ist, so sind auch das Lebensgefühl und die Beziehungen der Künstler eher ganzheitlich.
Die Frage lautet demnach: «Wie können Künstlerinnen anderen Künstlerinnen vom Glauben erzählen – ganzheitlich und verständlich?» Das heisst: Die Rede soll die ganzheitliche Beziehung nicht töten, und das Ganzheitliche soll die verständliche Verkündigung nicht ausklammern; denn ohne die Botschaft des Evangeliums kann kein Glaube entstehen und wachsen.
