Let us look at the fifth thesis in our series on “Art and Church”:
In the churches, it can be seen how “beautiful” Christian fellowship is. It is not easy, but important, that artists, too, should be part of the “Body of Christ” and should be set on fire with the longing for Christian fellowship. This will also bear fruit in their artistic activities.

Will the churches remain empty?

In many churches, not without good reason, there is a fear that, even after the lockdown is over, pews will predominantly remain empty. Churches in one or two places are in fact already experiencing this. Why? Are church members suddenly sensing a new freedom? If yes, freedom from what? From church programmes, from obligatory meetings, from difficult discussions in the home group, from boring church services …? Potentially, all of this could shatter our church landscape. Perhaps this is a good thing, because we would have to think anew about the essentials. What is essential? Fellowship!

Trend towards co-host podcasts

In these days of lockdown, people are longing for fellowship. Among the many signs of this is the current fashion for co-host podcasts. They chat like the best of friends, perhaps for a full hour. One listens to them in the podcast and has the feeling of being part of a secret society. “In the course of several episodes, these two people, who receive full access to our ears, become confidants, something like best friends, and accompany us through life from the cloud of streamed conversations,” we read in the Swiss newspaper Sonntags-Zeitung (5th July 2020), where a successful female host is quoted: “Women who listen to us write saying that they wish they also had a friendship like ours.” All of us long for fellowship.

Christian fellowship beyond Zoom?

Christian fellowship has a special quality because Christ is at the centre. In his book “Life Together”, Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes words of importance for all “brothers and sisters” (!):
«The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer. Longingly, the imprisoned apostle Paul calls his “dearly beloved son in the faith,” Timothy, to come to him in prison in the last days of his life; he would see him again and have him near. Paul has not forgotten the tears Timothy shed when last they parted (II Tim. 1:4). Remembering the congregation in Thessalonica, Paul prays “night and day … exceedingly that we might see your face” (I Thess. 3: 10)… It is easily forgotten that the fellowship of Christian brethren is a gift of grace, a gift of the Kingdom of God that any day may be taken from us, that the time that still separates us from utter loneliness may be brief indeed. Therefore, let him who until now has had the privilege of living a common Christian life with other Christians praise God’s grace from the bottom of his heart. Let him thank God on his knees and declare: It is grace, nothing but grace, that we are allowed to live in community with Christian brethren.»
There is no doubt that God’s Spirit also works in Zoom meetings. Yet, “where two or three gather in Christ’s name”, one will certainly experience yet another quality and dimension compared to the virtual world.

Conspire to inspire!

In conclusion, an appeal: Artist, do not remain alone! Launch out into the adventure of fellowship with other Christians. Be part of a church! That will not be without its crises and disappointments (e.g. regarding different understandings of art). But it is a chance to grow in love and to discover the beauty of the body of Christ. Let the churches ignite in you a burning longing for fellowship, which you carry out into the culture world. There, too, it is necessary for Christians to get together. Meet with your Christian colleagues to talk about your own work, for discussion of a relevant topic, for joint creative activity and, naturally, returning constantly to prayer. Often, it is from a fellowship of “conspirators” that inspiration flows. So open your fellowship to colleagues who do not know Christ and the beauty of a fellowship centred on Christ.*In the end, the blessing of such artists’ fellowships will flow back into the churches in manifold forms.

Die 5. These in unserer Reihe zu „Kunst und Kirche“ lautet:
In den Kirchen wird sichtbar, wie „schön“ christliche Gemeinschaft ist. Es ist nicht einfach, aber wichtig, dass auch Künstler Teil des „Leibes Christi“ sind und von der Sehnsucht nach christlicher Gemeinschaft angesteckt werden. Dies befruchtet auch ihr künstlerisches Wirken.
 
Bleiben die Kirchen leer?

In vielen Kirchen besteht die begründete Furcht, dass auch nach Aufhebung des Lock-Downs die Kirchenbänke mehrheitlich leer bleiben. Tatsächlich werden da und dort schon solche Erfahrungen gemacht. Was ist der Grund dafür? Fühlen die Kirchenmitglieder auf einmal eine neue Freiheit? Wenn ja, eine Freiheit wovon? Von kirchlichen Programmen, von erzwungenen Meetings, von schwierigen Diskussionen im Hauskreis, von langweiligen Gottesdiensten…? Dies alles hat das Potential unsere Kirchenlandschaft zu erschüttern. Vielleicht ist das gut so, weil wir uns dann neu auf das Wesentliche besinnen müssen. Was ist wesentlich? Gemeinschaft!

Paar-Podcasts im Trend

Der Mensch in den Zeiten des Lockdowns sehnt sich nach Gemeinschaft. Eines unter vielen Anzeichen dafür: Gegenwärtig sind Paar-Podcasts in Mode. Zwei Menschen erzählen sich etwas. Sie plaudern wie beste Freunde vielleicht eine Stunde lang. Man hört ihnen per Podcast zu und fühlt sich selber als ein Teil dieser verschworenen Gemeinschaft. „So werden diese Paare, die wir dicht an unsere Ohren heranlassen, über die Episoden zu Vertrauten, eine Art beste Freunde, deren aus der Wolke gestreamten Gespräche unser Leben begleiten“, schreibt die Schweizer Sonntags-Zeitung (5.Juli 2020) und zitiert eine erfolgreiche Podcasterin:  „Hörerinnen schrieben uns, sie wünschten sich auch so eine Freundschaft, wie wir sie haben.“ Wir alle sehnen uns nach Gemeinschaft.

Christliche Gemeinschaft jenseits von Zoom

Christliche Gemeinschaft hat eine besondere Qualität, weil Christus in der Mitte ist. Dietrich Bonhoeffer schreibt in „Gemeinsames Leben“  Worte, die  für alle „Brüder und Schwestern“ (!) wichtig sind:
„Die leibliche Gegenwart anderer Christen ist dem Gläubigen eine Quelle unvergleichlicher Freude und Stärkung. In großem Verlangen ruft der gefangene Apostel Paulus „seinen lieben Sohn im Glauben“ Timotheus in den letzten Tagen seines Lebens zu sich ins Gefängnis, er will ihn wiedersehen und bei sich haben. Die Tränen des Timotheus, die beim letzten Abschied geflossen waren, hat Paulus nicht vergessen (2. Tim. 1,4). Im Gedanken an die Gemeinde in Thessalonich betet Paulus „Tag und Nacht gar sehr darum, daß ich sehen möge euer Angesicht“ (1. Thess. 3,10)… Es wird leicht vergessen, daß die Gemeinschaft christlicher Brüder ein Gnadengeschenk aus dem Reiche Gottes ist, das uns täglich genommen werden kann, daß es nur eine kurze Zeit sein mag, die uns noch von der tiefsten Einsamkeit trennt. Darum, wer bis zur Stunde ein gemeinsames christliches Leben mit andern Christen führen darf, der preise Gottes Gnade aus tiefstem Herzen, der danke Gott auf Knieen und erkenne: es ist Gnade, nichts als Gnade, daß wir heute noch in der Gemeinschaft christlicher Brüder leben dürfen.“
Kein Zweifel: Gottes Geist wirkt auch in Zoom-Meetings. Doch „wo da zwei oder drei im Namen von Christus“ zusammen sind, wird zweifellos noch eine andere Qualität und Dimension als die virtuelle erfahren.

Inspiration braucht Konspiration

Zum Schluss ein Plädoyer: Künstler, bleibt nicht allein! Lasst euch auf das Abenteuer der Gemeinschaft mit anderen Christen ein. Seid Teil einer Kirche! Das wird kaum ohne Krisen und Enttäuschungen (z.B. über das unterschiedliche Kunst-Verständnis) bleiben. Aber es ist eine Chance, in der Liebe zu wachsen und die Schönheit des Leibes Christi zu entdecken.
Lasst euch in den Kirchen  infizieren mit der Sehnsucht nach Gemeinschaft und tragt diese hinaus in die Kulturwelt. Auch dort braucht es christliche Zusammenschlüsse. Trefft euch mit euren christlichen Kollegen zum Austausch über die eigene Arbeit, zur Diskussion rund um ein relevantes Thema, zum gemeinsamen Schaffen und natürlich auch immer wieder zum Gebet. Aus der „verschworenen“ Gemeinschaft fließt oft auch Inspiration. Öffnet dann eure Gemeinschaft für Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die Christus und die Schönheit einer Gemeinschaft rund um Christus noch nicht kennen*. Letztlich wird der Segen solcher Künstler-Gemeinschaften wieder vielfältig in die Kirchen zurückfliessen.
